The Office of Information and Data Protection Commissioner organized on 28th and 29th September 2015, the 27th edition of Case Handling Workshop, which took place in Tirana International Hotel.

This event, the most important of its kind, was held for the first time in Albania and was attended by representatives from around 25 counterpart authorities of Personal Data Protection, members of the European Conference. Participants in this meeting discussed and shared best experiences and practices on a technical level in this field.

In his welcoming speech, Mr. Besnik Dervishi, the Information and Data Protection Commissioner, emphasized the guarantees provided by the Law No. 9887, dated 10.03.2008 on “Personal Data Protection”, as amended. On the other hand, he stressed upon the fact that citizens’ awareness regarding the respect of their rights and privacy in particular, remains to be improved. Mr. Dervishi, also stated that in order to progress hand in hand with the dynamic development of information technologies, the Office of the Commissioner is identifying the possibility of potential legal improvements, in order to follow a similar philosophy, as in countries with advanced practices and high standards in citizens’ data protection.

The workshop was also greeted by Ms. Milena Harito, Minister for Innovation and Public Administration and Mr. Miklovan Kopani, representative of the Albanian Assembly. They highlighted the Commissioner’s Office efforts and its close cooperation with other institutions. Guaranteeing highest standards of citizens’ exercise of their constitutional rights and their protection constitute not only an institutional responsibility, but it also contributes for further democratization of our society, in its path toward European integration.
Part of the agenda of this event, were not only the presentations of counterpart authorities for personal data protection, but it also included public and private controllers, operating in our country, aiming to provide their best experiences and practices in the field of personal data protection.

The Office of the Commissioner was selected earlier this year as the host of XXVII Case Handling Workshop, with the back-up of the Information Commissioner’s Office of United Kingdom (ICO) and it constitutes a recognition of an increased activity of our institution in the international arena aiming to build cooperation bridges.

“Case Handling Workshop” is a forum which addresses best practices in the field of privacy and personal data protection. The workshop is established as a sub-group of the European Conference of Data Protection Authorities. Exchanging information on practical issues and promoting contacts among authorities are only some main purposes of this workshop. The documents of this event shall be summarized and will be introduced by the Albanian authority during the upcoming European Conference.
